Suitability Analysis Scenario

    The task for this scenario was to determine how much of the selected land would be suitable for a developer to build on. The analysis included criteria for land cover, soil, slope, streams, and roads. I began the analysis by running the Euclidean distance tool on the river and road rasters to get a distance raster. Next, I reclassified all five rasters to include the suitability rating. These suitability rasters were then combined using the weighted overlay. The scenario on the left, Equal Weight Scenario, gave all five rasters equal weight and values ranged from 2 to 5. Next, I ran the weighted overlay tool again, but the rasters were not equally weighted. The slope was weighted 40%, soil and land cover 20%, and distance to streams and roads 10%. This produced a different result, which is shown on the right. I also created a table that includes the km2 of each value for both scenarios.

Isarithmic mapping

In this module, I learned about isarithmic and flow line mapping. We were assigned to create an isarithmic map with contours. The subject of the map is the annual precipitation in inches in Washington state.  This map was created in ArcGIS Pro. I created this map using data acquired from the USDA and created by PRISM. I adjusted the symbology of the raster file to use precipitation colors (dark blue to dark orange). This map includes 10 manually adjusted breaks, which can be seen in the legend. I then created contour lines that follow the same value breaks. I created a hillshade for this raster using the hillshade tool. I selected the DRA (Dynamic Range Adjustment) tool to adjust the hillshade to the local area. From here the raster layers were ready for a map layout, which I have included below.

A little bit about me..

Hi there! My name is Emily Talbert and I am currently working on my master's in Historical Archaeology at UWF. I received my bachelor's in Anthropology from the University of South Alabama. This is my second GIS course, the first of which was focused only on archaeology, so I am excited to get a broader understanding of GIS. I am hoping to gain a really solid foundation in GIS that I will be able to apply to my future career in archaeology. I know that GIS is a valuable skill, so I am trying to learn as much as I can! GIS Programming- Exploring and Manipulating Data

 This week we learned about exploring and manipulating data in ArcGIS Pro with Python scripting. We learned about a variety of tools and methods, such as describe, exist, listing, dictionaries, and cursors. In the assignment, we were given a variety of tasks. First, we were to create a new file geodatabase. Next, we were to list all of the feature classes in another folder. We then copied those feature classes into the new file geodatabase. Using one of the files in the new geodatabase, we used the search cursor to identify the objects that matched specific criteria and printed that information. Finally, we created a dictionary with this information.  I encountered issues with populating the empty dictionary. I was attempting to use the row.getvalue method,  I kept receiving the error that my tuple did contain the attribute.
